This is the second book I’ve read and reviewed by the author ( check out my thoughts on Braced), and I LOVE the writing style! Taking Up Space, by Alyson Gerber, is an honest middle school novel about friendship, family and disordered eating. Every child reacts to these situations in different ways as he/she tries to grapple for control of some aspect of life. It’s the in-between stage where puberty is happening, friendships are changing, and kids start to pull away from their parents. Speaking from my own experiences as a middle school teacher, these are without a doubt some of the most difficult years for kids. ![]() As always, all opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way. Gustave Flaubert had published absolutely nothing before his mid thirties-and then opened with a masterpiece, Madame Bovary, published first in serial form (with some passages censored by the editors of the periodical La Revue de Paris), then as a book in 1857, but not before being dragged into court on charges of outrage to public morality. Here, Brooks ranks his favorite Flaubert works. Brooks's book also reveals small yet meaningful details from the correspondence between Flaubert and George Sands. Flaubert believed his novel, published in 1869, anticipated the "terrible year" of summer 1870-71, when France suffered defeat by Prussia, followed by bloody internal strife. Peter Brooks's excellent Flaubert in the Ruins of Paris: The Story of a Friendship, a Novel, and a Terrible Year is the perfect companion for reading Flaubert's Sentimental Education. ![]() ![]() Between 15, he would go on to see the remaining Henry VI plays, as well as Richard III and The Comedy of Errors performed. When he was 18, he married Anne Hathaway, who was 26, and six months later they had their first daughter, Susannah. Eventually Shakespeare had to join his father selling and making gloves, belts, and purses to keep the family business afloat. His father was elected the High Bailiff of Stratford (what we would consider a mayor today), but he accumulated a large amount of debt around the time Shakespeare was a teenager. There, Shakespeare studied rhetoric, Latin, and the classics. Although his father was a successful glove maker, at first he could only afford to send Shakespeare to grammar school. There was good humor, even after being attacked, Taylor managed to make us giggle with a joke. That’s probably the best part of the deal for me ❤️□ and yet he somehow let himself be absolutely melting by her, even after knowing that means trouble and he has to keep focus on the case!! He’s a divorced older man, he knows better, and he isn’t usually like this. Myles is her total opposite: rude, smart, crude. And the way they first introduced was FAB- turn around and slam herself into a closed door □ and then somehow she isn’t afraid of the big scary bounty hunter.
